Former Zhytomyr Mayor Serhii Sukhomlyn has been appointed as the head of the Agency for the Restoration and Development of Infrastructure, according to his Facebook post on Sept. 27. Sukhomlyn, who previously served as mayor of Zhytomyr from 2015 to 2024, will be taking over from Mustafa Nayyem, who resigned in June due to “systemic obstacles” that hindered his ability to do his job.
Nayyem’s resignation and subsequent reshuffles have strained relations between Kyiv and Western allies, raising concerns about Ukraine’s ability to address ongoing attacks on its energy infrastructure by Russia. Nayyem, who was also one of the first activists to call for demonstrations in Kyiv in 2013, played a key role in the EuroMaidan Revolution.
According to reports, Sukhomlyn’s appointment comes at a critical time as Ukraine faces the threat of a full-scale invasion by Russia. The country‘s 79th brigade recently released a video showing a “massive” Russian attack being repelled near Kurakhove, highlighting the need for increased support and firepower to defend against potential aggression.
In related news, Ukrainian drones have been targeting and destroying Russia’s oil refineries, but experts question whether this will have a significant impact on the country’s economy. Meanwhile, Russia has launched a counteroffensive in Kursk, raising concerns about Ukraine’s ability to hold its own against its powerful neighbor.
Overall, Sukhomlyn’s appointment and the ongoing tensions between Ukraine and Russia highlight the need for continued support from Western allies to help Ukraine defend itself against potential aggression.
