Shalva Papuashvili, Speaker of the Parliament in Georgia, said that it is not surprising that Michael Roth is responsible for foreign relations. She was responding to the German Bundestag resolution on Georgia entitled “Georgia For The European Future”.
According to Papuashvili there are people in German political circles who undermine the 30-year-old friendship between Georgians and Germans.
“We saw yesterday’s project, and today there were votes. We saw that the two largest German parties, as well as the representatives of opposition, did not support the resolution. This is a clear indication of all.
We were shocked to learn that people in German diplomacy and politics, among others, are undermining the 30 years of friendship. The special friendship between the Georgians and Germans. The German authorities know our emotional attachment to Germany as a country. It is heartbreaking that we would undermine the trust of Georgians for short-term gains.
“On the other hand, it is not surprising that Michael Roth will be responsible for foreign relations in Hans Genscher’s country,” Papuashvili stated.
The German Bundestag backed the resolution “For the European Future of Georgia”. The ruling majority parties – “Social Democratic Party”, the “Greens” & “Liberal Democratic Party” – supported the resolution. The opposition parties, “Christian Democratic Union”, “Alternative for Germany”, and ultra-left “Union of Sarah Wagenknecht”, voted against the resolution. “Leftists” abstained.
As stated in the resolution the authoritarian, anti-European policy of the current Georgian government deliberately puts Georgia’s European Future at risk.
The document states that the so-called “Transparency of Foreign Influence Law” cannot and will not further progress the process of joining European Union.
Here, the role of honorary chairman “Georgian Dream”, is highlighted. It is also said that the goal to maintain Bidzina’s power is more important than Georgia’s European Future and democratic stability.
