Protests in Georgia Turn Violent
The Speaker of the Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, spoke to journalists about the ongoing protests. He said that on the first day, some protesters attacked police officers and damaged the parliament building.
He explained that the initial phase of the protests was marked by violence. Protesters used pyrotechnics, threw stones, and even opened fire on police officers. This caused injuries to many people, including 150 police officers.
Some international observers described the protests as peaceful. They said things like “this is peace” because protesters were throwing flowers instead of stones or fireworks. However, Papuashvili believes that this kind of language only encouraged more violence.
He said that his goal is to make sure that everyone involved in the protest, including the police and protesters, stays safe. To achieve this, he wants to introduce some legislative changes.
These changes would include a ban on using pyrotechnics during protests and other safety measures. Papuashvili believes that this will help prevent more violence and keep people safe.
