Police Prevent Highway Blockade
The police in Georgia prevented a group of people from blocking the highway yesterday. The Chairman of the Parliament, Shalva Papuashvili, said that the task of the police is to prevent crimes from being committed.
Papuashvili told journalists that the rally was violent and that some politicians from Brussels called it peaceful. He found this surprising and said that when violence is called peace, it can incite more violence.
The group had planned to gather near the highway and block it. However, they were met by a police cordon that warned them not to do so. Despite this, they tried to break through the cordon and block the highway. The police prevented them from doing so.
Papuashvili said that when there is a violent demonstration, the police must use force to restrain it. He also said that individual incidents should be investigated by the special investigative service, not commented on by him.
The Chairman of the Parliament was critical of some Brussels politicians who called the violent demonstration peaceful. He said that this kind of language can encourage violence and that he wished they could experience such “peace” in their own capitals every day.
