Shalva Papuashvili (Chairman of the Georgian parliament and member of the “Georgian Dream Political Council) stressed the importance of the upcoming elections on October 26 during a speech given at a Batumi campaign event. He warned that this election will determine if the Georgian people continue to control their destiny or if an “externally-managed opposition” will seize the power and place Georgia at the service for foreign interests.
Papuashvili declared that “October 26 is a decisive moment where good should defeat evil, peace should overpower war, patriotism will triumph over vassalage and common sense will triumph against LGBT propaganda.” He claimed that the opposition was trying to take control of the Georgians, saying, “Will an externally managed opposition manage to take the Georgians’ power to decide their own fate and put it at the service to others’ interests?”
In his reflections on Georgia’s history, he emphasized how constant wars seemed to have been the nation’s destiny following independence. “Ever since our independence, constant wars have seemed to be our destiny… Papuashvili stated that the last 12 months have shown us it’s not destiny but who controls your destiny. He credited the “Georgian Dream’ government for maintaining 12 years peace.
Papuashvili compared this to the policies of both the previous government and the opposition, suggesting that following them would lead to sanctions against Russia and an economic collapse. He said that if Georgia had listened to the opposition, it would have faced an economic disaster similar in scale to the early 1990s.
Papuashvili cited the recent law he signed against LGBT propaganda as an example of a “struggle to values” in addition to the economic risk. He criticised the opposition’s response to the law. “The whole country saw the opposition sneaking away from the hall and the President hiding his signature during voting on this bill.”
Papuashvili ended his speech by urging Georgian voters to protect the country’s independence and values. He said, “October 26 marks a decisive moment in which good will triumph over evil, peace will triumph over war, patriotism will triumph service to others, and independence, vassalage and common sense, against LGBT propaganda.”
In his closing remarks he expressed confidence about the future of Georgia, declaring “Long Live Batumi, Long Live Adjara, Long live Georgia!”
