He made this statement in response to a question about Republican senators supporting Donald Trump joining a resolution on impeaching Georgian government representatives.
**Reason for Hope**
Papuashvili explained that Georgia is hopeful because of changes expected under the new US administration. He believes that “political approaches will change, which will change the context in the region.” This refers to Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine, which has affected relations between Western partners and Georgia.
**Previous Relations Affected**
The Chairman noted that previous relations with the West had been strained due to Georgia’s decision not to escalate tensions with Russia. He said that some Western partners were expecting Georgia to take a more confrontational stance, but it did not do so. As a result, Georgian leaders believe there is an opportunity to restore the level of relations that existed before.
**Criticism of Opposition**
Papuashvili also criticized the opposition for having a “primitive” approach to foreign policy, which focuses on personal contacts rather than national interests. He said that this approach has not worked well in the past and that Georgia’s government takes a more pragmatic and interest-based approach to its relations with other countries.
