The impeachment process of President Salome Zurabishvili, the President of Georgia is once again started by “Georgian Dream“.
Shalva Papuashvili announced this during a briefing at the office of the party.
“Greetings. “Greetings.
You also know that Salome Zourabichvili, after the confirmation of the violation to the Constitution, retained her position as President only with support from Parliament deputies of the radical opposition.
Salome Zourabichvili, despite receiving guarantees of immunity regarding the violation of Constitution from the radical opposition, continued to violate the Constitution of Georgia in a gross manner. Salome Zourabichvili, despite receiving guarantees of immunity from the radical opposition regarding the violation of the Constitution, continued to grossly violate the Constitution of Georgia.
It is important to note, that while foreign countries or organizations may have claimed ignorance about the requirement that the President obtain the consent of the Government of Georgia for visits before the Constitutional Court decision, receiving Salome Zourabichvili after this decision without the mandatory consent of Georgia’s Government constitutes a deliberate disrespect of Georgians and their constitutional order. It also violates the principle that non-interference is not allowed in the internal affairs and the values of Europe.
Our Constitution is a fundamental act that reflects the will of Georgians. Therefore, any violation, no matter how deliberate, open or brazen, cannot be ignored.
The majority of the parliament has therefore decided to re-start the impeachment process and to prepare a new constitution proposal that will be presented to the Constitutional Court of Georgia prior to the parliamentary elections.
In its first session, the newly-convened Parliament will remove Salome Zorabichvili by impeachment, with no less than 100 vote.
Salome Zourabichvili’s term of office will expire in this year. As a result, her term will be reduced by up to one month if she is removed from office by impeachment. The impeachment procedure to remove her from office is primarily symbolic in terms of her power, but the legal and political implications are also very significant.
The deliberate, gross and systematic violation of Georgia’s main law cannot go unpunished. Salome Zourabichvili should be treated as a former president, not a president who has violated Constitution. This precedent will play a vital preventive role to avoid such abuses in future and strengthen Georgian democracy”, Papuashvili stated.
