Sergei Shamba (de facto foreign ministry of occupied Abkhazia), in a meeting on October 9 with the co-chairs Geneva International Discussions, said that Abkhazia will welcome Georgia’s apology, as a step towards reconciliation.
Sergei Shamba responded to the statement of Honorary Chair Bidzina ivanishvili, founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party, which blamed 2008‘s war on “external” forces and the Georgian Government at the time. Ivanishvili claimed that the Georgian people would “find it in themselves” to apologize.
Shamba emphasized that Georgia should refrain from formulas that are not conducive for the settlement of relations. For example, referring to Abkhazia or Tskhinvali in the same breath as “occupied territory”. Shamba stressed that the political status Abkhazia is “not up for discussion”.
According to him the most important topics on the agenda for the Abkhazian part of the Geneva talks are “the nonresumption” of hostilities, and “the signing of a Peace Agreement” between the occupied area and Tbilisi.
The meeting was also attended by the so-called Abkhaz Foreign Ministry, who said that the issue of the resumption of meetings in Gali within the frameworks of the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism(IPRM) was also discussed.
