Radoslaw Sikorski, Poland’s Foreign Ministry, has responded to criticism by Ukraine regarding the slow supply fighter jets. He insists that his country has done “more for Kyiv than any other nation” on Nov. 1.
On October 31, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine still expects to receive Soviet MiG-29 jet fighters from Poland.
“We agreed with NATO to provide them (Poland), with a police missions, just like our Baltic Friends, who don’t have their own planes, but have such a task,” Zelensky stated.
“We agreed, but did Poland deliver the planes after that?” No. Was there another cause? He added, “Yes,” without giving any further details.
Sikorski responded by telling Polish journalists that Poland had done more in terms of GDP for Ukraine than any other country, taking into consideration “military and financial [assistance], economic, humanitarian, and [assistance] for Ukrainian refugees.”
He said that “almost 300 of the tanks we have, as well as heavy equipment and planes, are across the eastern border.”
“We are trying to help but we are also a frontline country.” “Russia also threatens us and not everything is feasible,” he said.
Poland has been one the strongest supporters of Ukraine ever since the full-scale Russian invasion began in February 2022. It has provided billions of dollars of military, economic and humanitarian aid, and hosted millions of Ukrainian refugees.
The country has also been an outspoken supporter of Ukraine in the international arena, campaigning to ensure that Ukraine receives all the necessary weaponry to end the war that Russia started.
But bilateral relations between the two countries are far from perfect. Both countries have long-standing grievances which are still far from being resolved.
