**Slovakia Resumes Russian Gas Imports**
Slovak gas company SPP has started importing gas from Russia again through the TurkStream pipeline. This happened on February 1st, with plans to double supplies by April.
The company’s chairman, Vojtech Ferencz, said that they still have a contract with Gazprom. He cited lower transit fees as a reason for choosing this supplier over others.
However, SPP will still need more gas from other routes because the current imports are not enough. This is because Slovakia’s gas needs were mainly met using domestic reserves last month.
**No Ukrainian Gas Transit**
Ukraine did not renew its agreement to transit Russian gas through its territory at the start of this year. Instead, it allowed the deal to expire on January 1st. Ukraine wanted to stop financing Russia’s war efforts.
After this decision, Slovakia’s Prime Minister Fico threatened to cut aid to Ukrainian refugees and turn off electricity supplies. He was not happy with Ukraine’s decision.
Fico is one of many who have spoken out against stopping Russian gas transit. His Hungarian counterpart, Viktor Orban, also opposed the move.
