Slovakia Sees Nationwide Protests Against PM Government
Protests broke out in more than 20 Slovak cities on January 24. People took to the streets, chanting slogans like “Enough of Fico” and “We are Europe.” They were opposing Prime Minister Robert Fico’s policies and his pro-Russian rhetoric.
The protests were organized by the “Peace to Ukraine” initiative and opposition parties. In Bratislava’s Freedom Square, organizers claimed 60,000 people took part. However, this number could not be independently verified.
Fico had recently accused opposition leader Michal Simecka of plotting to overthrow his government. Fico also criticized Simecka for pledging support for Ukraine’s NATO membership. Simecka, the leader of the pro-Western Progressive Slovakia party, had recently led a delegation of lawmakers to Kyiv to reestablish Slovakia’s support for Ukraine.
The protests were a response to Fico’s perceived alignment with Russian interests and his criticism of Western support for Ukraine. Many Slovaks feel that Fico’s policies go against their country’s values of being part of Europe.
