South Korea is considering providing lethal military aid to Ukraine in light of reports that North Korean soldiers are being trained in Russia to be used against Ukraine.
According to Yonhap News Agency, South Korea has pledged to take measures against North Korea over their increasing military cooperation. It also urged North Korea immediately to withdraw its troops from Russia.
Kyrylo Budanov (the head of the Ukrainian Main Intelligence Directorate) stated on 18 October that nearly 11,000 North Koreans are being trained by Russia to fight Ukraine. Videos of North Koreans being trained at Russian military bases appeared online shortly after Budanov’s claims. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian president, confirmed that Russia is integrating North Korean personnel into their forces.
The South Korean Presidential National Security Council said that the growing military ties between Pyongyang, Russia and South Korea pose a “significant threat to security” for both South Korea and international community. This is because it violates UN Security Council Resolutions prohibiting military co-operation with North Korea.
