“The last time, we adopted a system in the Rules of Procedure to choose the public defender. It was multi-step, and there were deadlines. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out. The Parliament decided to go back to the standard procedure outlined in its Rules of Procedure. This stipulates that a faction or political group can nominate a nominee. The Human Rights Committee will then examine the matter to identify the nominee. Shalva Papuashvili said at the Bureau meeting that 90 votes will be required in the next plenary.
The Speaker explained the procedure provided by the Rules of Procedure for the election of the Public Advocate.
“There aren’t any dates or guidelines but this process works.” We have been using this method since January 1, and now we have a candidate. I don’t know if anyone else would like to suggest someone, but since there is no deadline, we cannot frame or limit the process. The Human Rights Committee will discuss Levan Ioseliani‘s candidacy before it is presented to the Plenary Session. This is a crucial issue that is relevant for our society and it is important that it be discussed as quickly as possible”, Papuashvili said.
