Matthew Miller, State Department spokesperson, said in a briefing on Nov. 7, that the U.S. would support President Volodymyr Zelensky if he decided to begin negotiations with Moscow.
“It is not appropriate for us to force him into this or any other country. Miller said that we would support him through any process to ensure a just, lasting peace. But it is his decision.
Miller also emphasized that Ukraine has the right, under the U.N. Charter to maintain its territorial integrity and sovereignty, as well as its borders.
He said that the U.S. “has seen no indication” that Putin intends to “drop his request to continue to gobble up Ukrainian land.”
“I’m certain there’s a deal that Putin would accept, where he gets all that he wants and Ukraine gets nothing it is entitled to by law. But that’s not a deal that President Zelensky is interested in nor should be,” he continued.
Donald Trump’s administration is set to take office on Jan. 20, 2019. Trump’s allies claim that Ukraine is losing the conflict and, therefore pushing for a settlement would be morally right.
The Financial Times (FT), reported on October 28 that Trump intended to end the Russian War in Ukraine by freezing the conflict in the event of his victory in this year’s U.S. Presidential Election.

Trump has said he will end the war with Russia in “24 hours”, but he has not elaborated on how he intends to do it. Trump’s inner circle has made some statements and reports that suggest this could mean pressuring Ukraine to cede land or give up its NATO ambitions.
