**Georgian Dream‘s Backsliding on Democracy Worries UK**
The United Kingdom is expressing concern over the Georgian government’s move away from democratic values. Stephen Doughty, Minister of State for Europe and North America, has spoken out against the country‘s authoritarian tendencies.
In a statement, Doughty congratulated the Georgian Young Lawyers Association (GYLA) on winning the Defender of Democracy Award. This prestigious honor was given by the UK and seven other OSCE partner countries. The GYLA has been instrumental in supporting human rights activists and civil society organizations in Georgia who are facing increasing pressure from restrictive laws.
**A Slip Back into Authoritarianism**
Doughty’s comments were not optimistic about the Georgian government’s intentions. He noted that, after months of democratic backsliding, arbitrary arrests, and excessive force against protesters, politicians, and journalists, there is no indication that the ruling party, Georgian Dream, will return to its European path.
This is a worrying trend for a country that was once on track with its Western neighbors. The use of repressive legislation and violence against those who speak out or protest is not in line with democratic values.
**A Call to Reverse Course**
Doughty urged the Georgian authorities to reverse their isolationist behavior and return to democratic principles. He also thanked the GYLA for their crucial work in protecting the fundamental rights of Georgian citizens.
This is a clear message from the UK that it will not stand idly by while democracy is eroded in Georgia. The international community must continue to speak out against authoritarian tendencies and support those who fight for human rights and democratic values.
