Student Filmmakers React to Tabloid Claims
Student filmmakers in Belgrade are denying claims made by a pro-regime tabloid that they staged car incidents during protests.
The Informer tabloid, known for supporting the Vucic regime, said it had video evidence showing “new light” on traffic incidents during student protests. However, the students say their film is just a tribute to those who lost their lives in a concrete awning collapse and protesters who were beaten or run over by drivers.
The students started filming a docudrama about the protests a month ago. They filmed a scene in Kragujevac, away from the protest area. The pro-regime media took this video out of context to create a narrative that the filmmakers staged car incidents at student blockades.
A statement from the students said: “Those videos were recorded during the making of a film by final year movie direction students at Belgrade Arts University.” They used extras and actors, including fellow students. The students say their video was taken out of context to spin a false narrative.
