Protesters Block Traffic in Serbia for 15 Minutes of Silence
On Thursday, students and citizens took to the streets across Serbia. They blocked traffic on major roads to remember those who died in a tragic accident at a train station.
The accident happened on November 1. A concrete awning at the Novi Sad train station collapsed, killing 15 people and injuring two others. The train station had been recently renovated.
Students have been protesting for weeks. They are demanding answers from officials about what led to the tragedy. Many students also want changes in how the country is run.
The students have announced more protests for this week. On Friday, they plan to block traffic at a major intersection in Belgrade. The next day, they will demonstrate outside an agency that gathers information on security matters. They are calling it a “friendly chat” because they feel safe and have nothing to hide.
On Sunday, the students will gather outside the building of Serbia’s highest court. This is to show their disagreement with how things are run in the country.
Many people are joining the students’ protests. These include high school students, teachers, farmers, and ordinary citizens. Some 4,000 university professors and staff members also support the students.
