Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic Visits Patients in ICU, Sparks Outrage
Professor Vladimir Dugalic from the Faculty of Medicine in Serbia has criticized Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic for visiting patients injured in a nightclub fire in North Macedonia. Dugalic said that Vucic’s visit was “shameful political propaganda.”
The president visited patients on Monday evening, before even their families were allowed to see them. Some of the patients are in critical condition and need close medical supervision.
Dugalic, who is also a surgeon at the First Surgical Clinic of the University Clinical Center (UCC) of Serbia, said that he regrets being part of the medical profession when someone allows an unauthorized person into the ICU. He stressed that burns are open wounds and that the patients from North Macedonia are in life-threatening condition.
Dugalic publicly disowned his colleagues who allowed Vucic to enter the ICU, saying it was a participation in political propaganda that endangers people’s lives. He also criticized Health Minister Zlatibor Loncar for being part of this propaganda.
Other officials have visited patients from North Macedonia as well. On Tuesday morning, Mayor Dragoslav Pavlovic from the Serbian city of Nis visited two young men at the Military Hospital who were injured in the nightclub fire. A 45-year-old woman who was critically injured in the fire is also being treated at a hospital in Nis.
Photos of Vucic and Pavlovic with the injured patients have sparked strong reactions on social media, especially from citizens in North Macedonia. The Minister of Health of North Macedonia has asked the media to refrain from publishing photos and videos of the injured during their most vulnerable times.
