CNN reported that U.S. defense secretary Lloyd Austin arrived in Kyiv, Ukraine on October 21 to try and secure more support before the uncertain U.S. presidential election.
Austin’s visit came only a few weeks after U.S. Vice President Joe Biden visited Berlin to meet with the leaders of the U.K. Germany and France to discuss the continued support for Ukraine as well as Kyiv’s 5-step victory plan.
The U.S. Defense Chief is expected to meet with his Ukrainian counterpart Rustem Umerov to discuss Ukraine’s needs on the battlefield. CNN reported that the visit will be an opportunity to “step back” in order to assess the U.S. – Ukrainian relationship throughout the war.
Ukraine is in a difficult position. Despite Washington’s backing, Russian forces continue to advance in the east of the country while Ukraine prepares for new attacks against the energy grid as winter approaches.
The situation could deteriorate even further in the near future as the U.S. Presidential election on November 5 may have a profound effect on Washington’s support.
Donald Trump, the Republican nominee and former president of the United States, made recent comments criticizing Biden and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky. He said that they were responsible for the outbreak and full-scale conflict.
Some fear that if Trump wins his Democratic opponent, Vice President Kamalah Harris, and returns the White House, then he will withdraw U.S. assistance for Ukraine and force Ukraine to make painful concessions.

Sources told the Kyiv Independent that drones were used to target the large Sverdlov Plant, owned by the state and located in Dzerzhinsk, a city in the Nizhny Novgorod Region. This is about 900 kilometers into Russia.
Oleksandr Vilkul said that eight of the injured were currently hospitalized, but their condition is “moderate”.
