* Brighton a ‘different side without Gross’published at 12:1512.15 Image source: Getty Images BBC Radio Sussex’s Johnny Cantor paid tribute to Pascal Gross, after the former Albion Midfielder returned to say farewell to the fans before Sunday’s victory over Tottenham. Gross was Albion’s first signing following their promotion to the Premier League. He scored the club’s first goal and made 261 appearances over seven years. Cantor said on the Albion Unlimited Podcast that Gross had the amazing ability to do a Cruyff-style turn, but the ball was too far away for the defender to just sneak in and grab it. “And if he did, he simply played the simple ball and didn’t do that.” “There’s a Manchester United game where he did it three times. It’s just incredible. One of my Gross highlights is when he goes backwards and forwards, and no one can get close to him. “If you want to discuss whether they are a worse team without him, I think they are just a different team without him.” Gross scored 32 Albion goals and another 52 before he made the switch to Borussia Dortmund. Cantor said that Gross always made the right decisions, especially late in games. I always thought Albion would win games if he was there. “He knew how to deliver the ball into the box, and when to hold it in injury time for an opening. That was what made him so special. “He wasn’t fast but he covered lots of ground. He had a brilliant motor on him, was great from set-pieces, and his passing was superb. Scott McCarthyFan writer Image Source, Getty Images Albert Square was more cheerful on Christmas Day than the Amex Stadium on Sunday evening at 5.30pm. The Albion were 2-0 down at half-time, but this could have and should have been worse after the previous weekend’s 4-2 loss to Chelsea. During the half time break, words like “embarrassing”, ‘cricket score’ and ‘Sami Hyypia were heard. Albion supporters would not contest the Hyypia analogy, which was hilarious and wild. What happened in that second half was truly astonishing. Brighton looked like 11 men that had never played football before, but now they look like prime Barcelona. It was like a Sunday League side playing 45 minutes while still drunk from the previous night, waking up at half-time and then putting on a completely opposite performance in second half. Fabian Hurzeler is to be credited for achieving such a remarkable turnaround. Introduce Pervis Estupinan and whatever he said in the break helped. Hurzeler’s age was one of the sticks that several pundits used against him upon his appointment. How would Albion’s players react to a coach who was younger than them? We now know their reaction to what we assume was a Hurzeler blow dryer. Hyypia never achieved anything similar during his short reign as terror. Nor did he get the Amex to bounce as much as it did with three Brighton goals in 18 minutes. It’s hoped that this is the last time he gets to be heard at the Amex in a while. From disaster to masterclass The Albion never disappoints. You can find more information from Scott McCarthy on We Are Brighton.

* Is the New VAR Working? Published at 07:25 on 8 October07:25 on 8 October Image Source, Getty Images On Monday’s Q&A, Phil McNulty asked a question about VAR. @nubiblue asked on ‘X: Is the improved VAR working?” To me, it continues to favor certain clubs. Phil replied: I don’t think VAR favors certain clubs, and I haven’t noticed a huge difference or improvement. I would like to see a little less interference, but I have to admit that I’ve lost a lot faith in VAR. I was a big fan of VAR at first. I would be satisfied with semi-automated line and offside technology.
