**Switzerland Upgrades Nuclear Shelters Amid Ukraine Conflict**
The Swiss government is spending $250 million to modernize their network of nuclear shelters. This comes as the war in Ukraine continues, and concerns about stability in Europe have grown.
Switzerland has a large number of bomb shelters, with around 370,000 in total, including 9,000 public bunkers. The upgrades are not just about preparing for war, but rather an investment in public safety.
**Every Citizen is Protected**
The country’s Civil Protection Act guarantees that every resident – including foreigners and refugees – has a place to go in case of a nuclear attack or other emergency. This means that the nine million people living in Switzerland have access to protection from bombs and radiation.
Authorities stress that the upgrades are not about preparing for conflict, but rather about maintaining and keeping functional a network of shelters that should never be used.
**Problems Found in Shelters**
During inspections, authorities found some issues with the shelters. In one shelter, the doors didn’t close properly, and there was no suitable ladder in the ventilation tunnel. The building owner was given a year to fix these problems.
The upgrades are part of Switzerland’s efforts to stay safe amidst global tensions. The country has already provided humanitarian aid to Ukraine and transferred rescue equipment to support emergency services in war-affected regions.
