Tamar Kordzaia is a leader in the “Unity-National Movement”, a coalition that includes the “Georgian Dream Party”. She has accused them of confiscating ID cards from elderly citizens and employees of a shelter located in Tsnori. She called it “unthinkable,” and even the ruling party would not have done it. She also condemned the use government resources to intimidate voters or manipulate them ahead of the upcoming election.
Kordzaia revealed 22 elderly residents from Tsnori and nine employees were taken to the “Georgian Dream’ office and their identity cards confiscated. She called this a disgraceful act and criticized the ruling party for taking such measures to influence the elections.
The opposition leader claimed that “Georgian Dream”, the party, had mobilized the entire state apparatus in order to pressure and bribe Georgians ahead of the election. He said the party was desperate and afraid of losing power.
She also cited additional instances of alleged voter suppression, noting that in Adjara the opposition’s campaigns were obstructed by police, who stopped their representatives and confiscated their vehicles.
“There are only nine days before the elections, and ‘Georgian Dream’ knows that it will not win this election… This is why they have decided to fully engage government machinery to intimidate or bribe citizens of Georgia,” Kordzaia said.
She added that, when describing the incident in Tsnori: “ID cards and passports have been confiscated from 22 older people and nine employees and taken to ‘Georgian Dream’ office. Even a criminal government could not commit a more shameful act.
Kordzaia urged citizens to not be afraid, assuring that the opposition would protect their rights. “We call for those people whose identification cards have been confiscated to not be afraid and to come to our representatives in the office of the ‘Unity-National Movement.’ We will definitely protect them.”
She concluded with a call for action to voters: “There are nine days left until the elections and victory is on your side.” We should all vote and make our own choice for our future and that of our country.
