**Council of Europe Resolution Sparks Hope for Delegitimization of Georgian Government**
A crucial resolution passed by the Council of Europe has sent shockwaves throughout Georgia, sparking hope among opposition parties that the government’s legitimacy is finally being questioned. The resolution, which demands new elections and the release of political prisoners, marks a significant shift in the organization’s stance on the country’s governance.
Tazo Datunashvili, a member of the “Lelo – Strong Georgia” coalition, hailed the resolution as a major step towards delegitimizing the government. He noted that never before has there been such pressure from the Council of Europe, which has been a member since 1999. The resolution’s emphasis on what he called the “hate collector” Tsulukiani is doing with the investigative commission further undermines the government’s credibility.
“This is not just about calling for new elections and releasing political prisoners,” Datunashvili said. “It’s also about highlighting the misuse of power by the current regime, which has used its institutions to restrict citizens’ freedoms and perpetuate repression.”
**Sanctions on Law Enforcement Heads a Welcome Move**
Datunashvili also welcomed the UK’s sanctions on the heads of Georgia’s law enforcement agencies, citing their role in destroying the rule of law, independence of investigations, and institution of the police. He emphasized that these individuals have used their positions to harm citizens’ health and torture them.
“The sanctions are a long-overdue response to the government’s abuse of power,” Datunashvili stated. “We have no means of finding justice within the country, as there is no investigation and citizens cannot fairly confront state institutions. These sanctions will continue, and evading them is impossible.”
**A Message to Ivanishvili’s Regime**
The resolution and sanctions send a clear message to the government that its actions are being watched and criticized by the international community. Datunashvili emphasized that these measures are an attempt to bring the regime to its senses and stop the repression of society and the killing of democracy.
“If not, the sanctions will methodically reach the oligarch himself and the highest levels of political responsibility,” he warned.
The resolution’s passing marks a significant turning point in Georgia’s politics, as it signals that the Council of Europe is finally taking a firm stance against the government’s abuses. As Datunashvili noted, this pressure has never come from the organization before, making it all the more critical for the regime to take heed.
