Tbilisi hosted the 4th Tbilisi International Forum on “Nuclear and Radiological Security of the Black Sea Region under the conditions of new threats and changing environment“.
Lasha Darsalia addressed the participants and stressed the importance of the international community’s concerted and joint efforts to combat the threat of weapons and their proliferation.
The conversation focused on the deteriorating security situation in the region caused by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. The First Deputy Foreign Minister drew special attention to the threat posed by Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine, which is preventing the International Atomic Energy Agency from fully implementing on-site verification.
Darsalia also spoke of the occupied territories in Georgia, where a lack of control mechanisms creates fertile grounds for illegal activities of all kinds, including the proliferation of terrorism, weapons and technologies of mass destruction and related materials.
In conclusion, First Deputy Minister noted Georgia is fully aware its responsibility towards the international community and is striving to contribute to strengthening the existing nuclear security infrastructure.
The forum is organized and co-organized by the “Civil Council on Defense and Security Issues” and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia. The forum is a platform for discussions between government, civil society and international organizations. Participants will discuss nuclear and radiological safety, non-proliferation priorities, challenges and opportunities in the Black Sea region, and other issues.
