The Telegraph reported that Ukraine is developing a drone capable of tracking and intercepting Shahed-type drones. Since the fall of 2022, Russia has launched thousands Iranian-designed Shaheds against Ukraine. The Telegraph reported that Kyiv has developed a new weapon named “Sting” which is a first person view (FPV) drone capable of chasing and neutralizing Shahed drones instead of conventional air defence systems. The Wild Hornets group said that “Sting” can fly at speeds of over 100 miles an hour and altitudes up to 10,000 feet. The weapon can be controlled from the ground by VR goggles. It is the world’s first drone designed to specifically target Russia’s Shahed arsenal. The Sting drone’s average cost, according to a Wild Hornet Source, is dozens of time lower than the Shahed drone. This may allow Ukraine in the coming months to conserve its air defence munitions as Russia intensifies its aerial attacks against Ukrainian cities and nation’s power grid. Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, said on October 20 that Russia had launched 6,230 Shahed drones against Ukraine since the start of the year. During Russia’s full scale invasion, Ukraine and Russia invested heavily in dronetechnology which revolutionized modern warfare. Multiple videos show how Ukrainian FPV-drones have destroyed Russian reconnaissance drones on the battlefield. Ukraine in September created the Unmanned Systems Forces a separate branch within the Armed Forces of Ukraine dedicated to drone warfare. Kyiv has said that it plans to produce 1,000,000 drones in 2018, on top of the thousands pledged from foreign partners.
