Georgia’s Opposition Speaks Out Against Alleged Falsified Elections
The leader of the “Gakharia for Georgia” party, Teona Akubardia, has spoken out against the recent parliamentary elections in Georgia. She claims that the Central Election Commission (CEC) wrote down results dictated by Bidzina Ivanishvili, a leader of the ruling Georgian Dream party.
Akubardia said: “We all share the patriarch’s desire for peace. But in this situation, it is difficult to imagine peace when there is violence and interference with people’s rights.” She also mentioned that the church does not interfere with secular affairs, but the current situation makes it hard to achieve peace.
The politician emphasized that her party will not legitimize the rigged elections. “We do not think that Ivanishvili will be in parliament, even though he is number one on the list,” she said.
On the other hand, Catholic Patriarch Ilia II congratulated the Georgian Dream party on their victory. He expressed hope that both the government and opposition will use the following years for the progress and prosperity of the country.
