Teona Akubardia is a member of “Gakharia For Georgia”, a movement that advocates for the country’s EU membership. She emphasized the fact that the President will decide what to do before the elections. She expressed her confidence that the President would continue to support Georgia’s European Future, given the country’s path towards EU Membership.
Akubardia answered questions about the formation of a “technical” government and whether or not President Salome Zurabishvili was considered for the position as Prime Minister. Akubardia said that the President hasn’t expressed a desire to run for prime minister at this time. She reiterated that the President has the right to decide the timing and the composition of a government.
Akubardia stated that, in terms of Georgia’s future political, the “Charter”, signed by her movement, outlines a comprehensive program to implement the nine EU recommendations, which are crucial for Georgia’s integration with the EU. This plan will be implemented after the parliamentary election and aims to reopen the door to Europe. Akubardia believes that the current “Georgian Dream government” has hindered this process.
Akubardia views the “technical” government as a way to ensure that the “Georgian Dream”, while remaining in the opposition, prevents the return of “National Movement” back to power. She emphasized that members of the technical government proposed must not have any ties to the former “National Movement” administration, citing serious criticisms and allegations of crimes against this administration.
Akubardia, as the elections on October 26 approached, highlighted the importance of this moment for Georgia, expressing her optimism that the Georgians will secure the country’s place in Europe. She sees this election as pivotal in determining the future of the country, and believes that the technical government plan is a part of a larger strategy to restore Georgia’s European trajectory.
Akubardia said that the march “Georgia Chooses the European Union”, scheduled for 20 October, is a sign that Georgia has already chosen to be a part of the European family. Georgia’s future, according to Akubardia, lies in Europe and the citizens of the country are ready to reaffirm this commitment.
