The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania reported that the Georgian Ambassador was summoned to the agency by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania after the Parliament of Georgia overrode the President Salome Zurabishvili’s veto of so-called “Foreign Influence” law.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its deep regret regarding the action taken by the ruling Georgian party and other actions that are aimed at intimidating or restricting the civil society’s activities in the country. These actions are in direct contradiction to the country’s ambitions for integration into NATO and the European Union.
“The European Union granted Georgia Candidate Status in December 2023 on condition that it fulfilled the nine recommendations of European Commission. The EU warned Georgia’s Parliament that the draft law on foreign influence was incompatible with fundamental EU values and standards, and would delay the implementation of reforms outlined by at least three out of nine European Commission recommendations.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania stated that “a number of legislative initiatives incompatible to integration into the European Union have been introduced in the country. Anti-Western propaganda has been spread and mass protests followed by a government campaign of intimidation and violence against civil society representatives.”
In a statement, the agency states that Lithuania is deeply worried about these events. Together with its partners it is considering possible retaliatory actions in relation to Georgia.
The statement stated that Lithuania “continues to support the aspirations and goals of the Georgian people, who envision the country’s future relationship with the European Union, NATO and the European Union”, by ensuring free and fair elections.
