Georgia veered off the path that was set out for it when it was granted candidate status. Marta Kos, candidate for the position of European Commission for Neighborhood Policy and Expansion, told the European Parliament that there is still hope for a return to Europe with the help of democratic forces, and perhaps even the government’s actions.
According to her, the first condition for continuing the negotiations with Georgia is to eliminate laws that are incompatible with European values.
“If they decide that they want to go back to European way, then I will be first to continue the process. But certain conditions must be met.” We have stopped the negotiations to include Georgia on the European path due to laws that do not match the values of the European Union. Marta Kos said, “The first step is to eliminate the laws that are incompatible with European values”.
She also spoke about the importance civil society in Georgia.
“As to how we should support civil society. Marta Kos said, “In my opinion, civil society is like a watchman for the government. It’s an observer, not only in candidate countries but also in member states“.
