New Way of Electing Georgia’s President
For the first time in history, the president of Georgia will be elected through a new method. Instead of a direct election, the president will be chosen by an electoral college made up of 300 members.
Changes to Election Rules
The Central Election Commission (CEC) has explained that some changes had to be made due to the Parliament’s decision to schedule elections on December 14. This is in line with the Constitution.
How Elections Will Work
* The election of the President of Georgia will be decided by the Parliament.
* If the election coincides with parliamentary elections or a month before it, the presidential election will be held within 45 days of the first session of the newly elected Parliament.
* The CEC administers the elections and made changes to events and deadlines due to the new date.
Key Deadlines
* By December 2, the Parliament and representative bodies must submit lists of members to the CEC.
* On December 5, at least 30 members of the electoral college can nominate a candidate for president.
* Registration of candidates will be done by December 8.
Voting Day
* The election of the President of Georgia (first round) will take place on December 14 in the Palace of the Parliament from 9:00 to 14:00, or earlier if all members have voted.
* In the first round, a candidate needs at least two-thirds of votes to be elected. If not, a second round will be held and the candidate with more votes will be chosen.
Quotas for Authorized Parties
* The CEC has determined quotas for authorized parties in the electoral college:
+ “Yes to Europe” – 1 member
+ “European Georgia” – 2 members
+ “Unity – National Movement” – 36 members
+ Other parties – varying numbers of members
* Detailed information can be found on the CEC website.
