Ukrainska Pravda, citing the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, reported that Admiral Ihor voronchenko was dismissed from his post as the chief inspector of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.
The Main Inspectorate of Defense Ministry audits ministry activities, including monitoring quality of military training, staffing and oversight of military aviation safety. It also conducts technical investigations.
Rustem Umerov, the Defense Minister, signed the order dismissing Voronchenko in October. The ministry did provide no reasons for Voronchenko’s dismissal.
It is still unknown who will replace Voronchenko.
In September, controversial politician Mariana Bezuhla claimed that Umerov fired Voronchenko following his report on military training centres at a meeting with the headquarters of supreme commander-in chief.
Bezuhla claimed that the report of the admiral was highly critical and “angry” Commander-in Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi. This information has yet to be confirmed by any official.
Voronchenko joined the Ukrainian Navy in 2003.
He was in Crimea in 2014 when Russia invaded the peninsula and illegally annexed it. He was a deputy commander in the Navy at that time.
Voronchenko served as the chief commander of Russia’s Navy from 2016 until 2020. He was then appointed Inspector of the Defense Ministry.
