Changes to Party Laws Proposed in Georgia
The Georgian Dream party has proposed changes to the Law on Political Unions of Citizens. If approved, these changes will give the Constitutional Court new powers.
Currently, a party can be banned by the Constitutional Court if it wants to change the country‘s government through force or violence. It also includes groups that try to break the country apart or create conflict among different national, ethnic, or religious groups.
The proposed changes would allow the court to ban any party whose goals and activities are similar to a party already banned. This means that if one party is already banned because of its violent goals, another party with similar goals could also be banned.
If a party is banned, its remaining property will go to the state treasury.
