The Georgian parliament plans to establish a temporary investigative commission to probe into alleged crimes committed by the United National Movement (UNM) government from 2003 to 2012. This decision comes after Bidzina Ivanishvili, leader of the ruling party Georgian Dream (GD), promised to bring to justice all former UNM officials responsible for various atrocities.
**President Zurabishvili on US Trip**
President Salome Zurabishvili confirmed that she will attend the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump on January 20. She also spoke about the need for new elections due to the country’s deepening political crisis.
**Defense Minister at Ukraine Meeting**
Georgian Dream’s Defense Minister Irakli Chikovani attended a meeting of the 25th Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Germany. This was the first visit by a senior Georgian Dream official to an EU country other than Hungary, amid disputed election legitimacy and international isolation.
**US Congress Criticizes GD**
The US Congress sent a letter to Marko Rubio, criticizing Georgia’s authoritarian rule and tilt towards China, Russia, and Iran. The letter also listed names of Ivanishvili’s enablers responsible for elite corruption, propaganda, and repression.
**New Bill in the US Congress**
Republican Joe Wilson and Democrat Rep. Steve Cohen introduced the “Georgian Nightmare Non-Recognition Act” in the US Congress. This bill bars recognition or normalization of relations with any Georgian government led by Bidzina Ivanishvili due to ongoing crimes against the Georgian people.
