French Assembly Backs Ukraine, Condemns Russia’s Interference
The French National Assembly has adopted a resolution that supports Ukraine and criticizes Russian interference in democratic processes. The assembly also condemned Russia’s actions in elections in Moldova, Georgia, and Romania.
Meanwhile, the Czech Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs has tabled a resolution about Georgia. It expresses concerns over “widespread irregularities” in the October 26 elections and calls for new parliamentary elections under neutral supervision to resolve a severe constitutional crisis.
The V-Dem Institute has downgraded Georgia’s democracy status from “electoral democracy” to “electoral autocracy”. This change reflects a significant democratic backslide, especially since 2024 marks the country’s steepest decline since gaining independence.
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze thinks that EU candidate status was given to incite revolution in Georgia. He believes there have been four failed revolutions: by parties, journalists, NGOs, and an “amorphous mass” of people. Despite this, he supported the application for EU candidate status.
Kobakhidze also thanked protesters for paying fines as they continue to exercise their right to peaceful assembly. However, the government will continue to provide personal bodyguards to former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and former Culture Minister Tea Tsulukiani, despite not meeting the usual criteria for state protection.
