Protesters Gather in Front of Parliament Building
A rally was taking place on Rustaveli Avenue, in front of the Parliament building. Environmental activists joined the protesters, causing a big reaction from the crowd.
People gathered to protest presidential elections being held in Parliament. They are unhappy with how things are going and think it’s not fair. Some protesters brought diplomas and balls as symbols of their discontent.
Environmentalists also joined the protest. They came from Republic Square and marched along Rustaveli Avenue, carrying banners and flags of Georgia and the European Union. “Georgia!” was being chanted by some participants.
As more protests are planned to take place throughout the day, police forces have been mobilized around the Parliament area. Police officers are stationed on 9 April and Chichinadze streets.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs has also set up a presence in front of the Parliament building, where a main New Year’s tree is located. The area is being secured with iron barriers.
Police vehicles, including water cannon units, have been deployed at Freedom Square nearby.
