European Parliament Disputes Georgian Elections Results
The European Parliament has passed a resolution stating that the international community should not recognize the results of Georgia’s recent parliamentary elections. The elections were held on October 26, 2024.
According to the resolution, the European Parliament believes that the legitimacy of voting was seriously undermined due to numerous violations, including intimidation and vote manipulation. It calls for new elections within a year, with improved conditions and international oversight.
The European Parliament also condemned Georgia’s failure to meet international standards for democratic elections. It said that the country’s ruling party is fully responsible for democratic backsliding in the country.
Violations cited in the resolution include:
* Intimidation of voters
* Vote manipulation
* Obstruction of election observers and media
* Reports of electronic voting machine manipulation
The European Parliament also expressed concern over the confiscation of voter verification machines and electoral documents by the Prosecutor’s Office. It called on the authorities to allow voters to verify their participation in the elections.
In addition, the European Parliament stressed that the Georgian government’s failure to respond to complaints about election fraud and manipulation has led the country to the brink of an internal political crisis and international isolation from its democratic partners.
The resolution supports an independent, transparent investigation into allegations of electoral manipulation and voter intimidation. It also welcomes the decision by the European External Action Service (EEAS) to send a technical mission to Georgia and calls for a broad mission mandate to ensure accurate observation of elections in the country.
