The European Parliament will address the violation of media freedoms in Georgia during its plenary session from 6-9 June.
The resolution is entitled “Violations of Media Freedom and Security of Journalists” and will be discussed in the European Parliament’s on 8th June and voted on 9th June.
Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova await a decision by the European Union about whether they will apply for membership. The European Parliament does not have the power to make decisions in the process for the applicant country’s admission, but its support is a powerful political signal.
The European Parliament adopted a resolution on March 1, a day after Ukraine filed its application, in which it called on EU institutions to work towards granting candidate status to Ukraine. On May 5, the European Parliament passed a similar resolution regarding Moldova’s application. In its resolution, the European Parliament welcomed Moldova’s request for EU membership. It also stated that the EU should give it candidate status. The European Parliament has yet to adopt a similar resolution regarding Georgia.
On June 2, a new resolution on Georgia, titled “State of the Media”, was added to agenda of the European Parliament Plenary Session. The title indicates that the resolution does not deal with the general situation of Georgia or the EU’s relations with Georgia, but rather the state of the media.
