**New Law in Georgia: Fines and Jail for Not Registering as Foreign Agent**
The government of Georgia is introducing a new law that makes it a crime not to register or to misrepresent yourself as a foreign agent. This law, called the “Foreign Agents Registration Act“, is similar to one used in the United States.
If people don’t follow this law or if they give false information, they can face fines or even be sent to jail for up to five years. This new law was proposed by the ruling party, “Georgian Dream“.
**Previous Law Only Had Fines**
Last spring, Georgia passed a law called the “Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence“. However, this law only gave fines for not following its rules. The new law takes it further and makes non-compliance a crime.
