Irakli Kobakhidze is the chair of the ruling Georgian Dream party (GD). He stated that the government had ruled out engaging with Ukraine in consultations over the case of former President Mikheil Sakashvili.
As Kobakhidze pointed out, the Georgian ambassador in Ukraine, Giorgi Zakarashvili, was in Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict, unlike the other ambassadors of Ukraine’s strategic partners.
“Despite the fact Russian tanks were stationed at Kyiv, the ambassador of the United States stayed there every day and took care of a lot of things. His contribution in terms humanitarian and political support has been crucial. In light of this, the Ukrainian government’s decision is offensive and disappointing. We will not comment on the matter. “We intend to maintain our friendship with the Ukrainian authorities, which is one-sided,” he said.
On July 4, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry said that the Georgian government must stop abuse of the Ukrainian citizen Mikheil Sakaashvili, and asked the Georgian ambassador to return to Tbilisi in order to resolve the issue.
The Ministry stated that “in this regard, it was suggested that Ambassador of Georgia in Ukraine, Giorgi Zakarashvili, return to Tbilisi to consult to find ways to resolve the situation.”
