Members of Strong Georgia Being Questioned in Court
Two members of the political union Strong Georgia are being questioned at Tbilisi City Court. Eka Giorgobiani and Tornike Artkmeladze will answer questions from a magistrate judge.
The reason for their questioning is that they refused to accept a letter addressed to Badri Japaridze, the leader of Strong Georgia. The letter was related to a summons to appear before a parliamentary commission.
Tornike Artkmeladze said they refused to accept the letter because it was not addressed to the political union itself, but to Badri Japaridze specifically. He believes that accepting the letter would have been against the law.
Artkmeladze is a lawyer and says he acted within his legal authority when refusing to accept the letter. He thinks the government has overstepped its powers in questioning him as a witness.
The case seems to be related to Badri Japaridze’s failure to appear before an investigative commission. Artkmeladze believes that there were other ways for the summons to be delivered to Mr. Japaridze directly.
