Lawyers Demand Better Conditions for Court Proceedings
Eight individuals, detained during protests on charges of organizing and participating in group violence, have been facing trial. Their lawyers have spoken out against the court conditions.
The lawyers addressed Judge Irakli Khuskivadze, requesting that the proceedings be moved to a more suitable courtroom. They clarified that they are not refusing to defend their clients.
In their statement, the lawyers explained why they left the courtroom in protest during the ongoing trial. They said that they want proper working and humane conditions from the court.
The lawyers stated that despite their motion to transfer the hearing to another courtroom, it was denied. One of the defendants became ill and needed medical attention, but the court ignored these circumstances. As a result, the defendants and their lawyers left the courtroom in protest before all the lawyers’ positions were heard.
The lawyers emphasized that they remain committed to defending their clients’ rights. They requested the opportunity to properly exercise this right and create proper working and humane conditions.
Background: The eight individuals are facing charges related to group violence. Three of them are accused of organizing and leading group violence and could face 6-9 years in prison. Five others are charged with participating in group violence and could face 4-6 years in prison.
