Lithuania’s support for Georgia is not meant to interfere with the country’s internal politics. This was said by Lithuania‘s Foreign Minister, Kęstutis Budrys.
The minister spoke about why Lithuania imposed sanctions on some Georgian politicians. He said it was because Georgia did not keep its promise to hold free and fair elections last year. This promise was a condition for Georgia to move closer to the European Union and get EU candidate status.
When asked about criticism from Remigijus Žemaitaitis, leader of the “Nemuno Aušra” party, who said Lithuania should not interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, Minister Budrys replied that this was only about Georgia breaking its promise. He said it was not about trying to influence Georgia’s domestic politics.
