Ukrainian Cruise Missile Strike Destroys Russian Ship in Crimea
On December 26, 2023, a Ukrainian cruise missile strike destroyed a large Russian landing ship called the Novocherkassk. The ship was docked in Feodosia port, which is occupied by Russia in Crimea.
The Novocherkassk was originally designed for naval landings but had been repurposed to transport cargo. It was part of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet. Unfortunately, this was not the first time a Russian vessel like it had been destroyed by Ukraine. Since the start of the war, four other large amphibious landing ships had been damaged or destroyed.
The strike on the Novocherkassk was particularly devastating because it killed 34 Russian sailors. The ship was carrying explosive cargo when it was hit, which detonated and caused a massive fire and explosion. As a result, the vessel was completely destroyed.
A memorial in Novocherkassk has been built to honor the sailors who lost their lives in the attack. Photos of the memorial have been shared on social media, showing plaques with the names of the deceased crew members.
The Ukrainian Air Force had targeted the Novocherkassk with cruise missiles, which destroyed the ship and killed its crew. The incident highlights Ukraine’s ability to damage or destroy Russian vessels in the Black Sea.
In October 2024, Russian forces began salvaging the remains of the Novocherkassk from the seabed near Feodosia. The recovery process was shown in photos shared on a Russian forum called Aviabaza.
