Protests in Batumi: 8 People Detained
The police in Batumi, a city in the region of Adjara, have detained eight individuals during a protest. The protesters were opposing some government decisions.
According to Irakli Dgebuadze, head of the local police department, all detainees were taken into custody under administrative procedures. This means they were not charged with serious crimes, but rather with minor offenses such as insulting or resisting police officers.
The protests got heated at times today near the Adjara Government House. The first problem started when a leader of an opposition group tried to put up stickers. She was arrested. Another politician, Giorgi Kirtadze, was also detained.
Other people who were taken into custody include members of several opposition groups: Shushana Matsaberidze from “Droa”, Luka Natsvlishvili from “Strong Georgia“, and Elizbar Chkhikvadze from “Gakharia – For Georgia”.
A journalist, Guram Murvanidze, was also arrested. He works for a local publication called “Batumelebi”.
