Russia Deploys Trained Assault Groups in Southern Ukraine
The Russian army has placed trained assault groups in frontline positions in Zaporizhzhia oblast, according to Ukrainian officials. The move is seen as a preparation for an attack on the town of Orikhiv and other strategic locations.
Voloshyn, a spokesperson, stated that Russia aims to gain control over logistical routes from Zaporizhzhia into eastern Ukraine. He also mentioned the Hulyaipole Sector as another target, where important logistics routes are located.
The area was the main front of Ukraine’s southern offensive in 2023, which resulted in the liberation of Robotyne but no major breakthroughs. Russian troops have intensified their attacks against Zaporizhzhia, targeting civilian infrastructure with guided aerial bombs.
This development comes after Voloshyn previously warned that a new Russian offensive could start “any day.” The Ukrainian government has expressed concerns about a possible Russian push in the south, as Moscow’s forces continue to advance in eastern Ukraine.
