**Australian Teacher Still Alive in Russian Captivity**
The Australian government has received confirmation from Russia that Oscar Jenkins, a 32-year-old teacher captured last year while fighting for Ukraine, is still alive. This news comes as a relief to the government and Mr. Jenkins’ family.
Mr. Jenkins was taken prisoner by Russian forces during his time serving with Ukraine’s military. There were earlier reports suggesting he had been killed in captivity, prompting “grave concerns” from the Australian government. However, Foreign Minister Penny Wong has now confirmed that Russia has acknowledged Mr. Jenkins is alive and in their custody.
Despite this welcome news, the Australian government remains concerned for Mr. Jenkins’ welfare as a prisoner of war. They are calling on Russia to release him, and to treat him in accordance with international humanitarian law. The Geneva Convention protects prisoners from violence or intimidation.
Ukraine’s ambassador to Australia has described the confirmation of Mr. Jenkins’ survival as “good news,” but is seeking more evidence, including video proof, to confirm his well-being. Mr. Jenkins is believed to be the first Australian to have been held captive while fighting for Ukraine.
A disturbing video surfaced last December showing Mr. Jenkins being questioned and hit by Russian forces. In it, he explains that he is a teacher and soldier who lives in both Australia and Ukraine.
