**Serbia‘s Voting Error at the UN**
The Serbian President, Aleksandar Vucic, has apologized for Serbia voting in favor of a Ukrainian resolution at the UN General Assembly. The resolution condemned Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
On February 24, the UN General Assembly approved the resolution with 93 countries voting in favor and 18 against. However, Serbia was supposed to abstain from voting on this issue. Vucic said he was tired and overwhelmed when making the decision.
Serbia has a friendly attitude towards Russia and has refused to join international sanctions against Moscow. But Vucic has also called Ukraine a “friendly country” and previously stated that Crimea and Donbas are Ukrainian sovereign territories.
**Consequences for Serbia**
Vucic expects his vote error to result in him losing favor or political points in the EU. He said, “I apologize to the citizens of Serbia for that, and I take the blame for that because I was probably tired and overwhelmed.”
**UN Resolution**
The Ukrainian resolution explicitly names Russia as the aggressor state and demands the complete withdrawal of troops. The American version of the resolution did not mention Russia as an aggressor but after changes from EU countries, it included the wording “Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.”
