European Union Watches Georgia Closely
The European Commission is keeping a close eye on what’s happening in Georgia. This was said by Anitta Hipper, the commission’s spokesperson for foreign and security affairs.
Georgia held parliamentary elections in October. The European Union sees this as a sign of democratic backsliding. There have been reports of repression against civilians, journalists being jailed, and innocent protesters being targeted.
The EU responded quickly to these developments. They downgraded their political contacts with Georgia and stopped giving direct assistance to the government. Instead, they decided to give financial support to civil society groups.
Anitta Hipper made it clear that the EU’s position on Georgia remains unchanged. This shows that the world is paying attention to what’s happening in the country.
