Pre-Trial Hearing for Aleko Elisashvili Takes Place in Tbilisi
A pre-trial hearing is being held at the Tbilisi City Court for Aleko Elisashvili, a leader of the “Strong Georgia” party. He is accused of politically motivated persecution. Today’s session will discuss whether to admit evidence and decide if the case should be sent to court for further consideration.
Aleko Elisashvili is attending the hearing. He has denied any wrongdoing and does not plead guilty. Prosecutor Zviad Gubuladze told journalists that on December 2, 2024, Aleko Elisashvili physically and verbally assaulted Ali Babayev, chairman of the “National Congress of Azerbaijanis” and a founder of the “Georgian Dream – Democratic Georgia” party. The prosecutor claims there is evidence showing Aleko Elisashvili committed violence for political reasons.
Prosecutor Gubuladze stated that watching a video recording of the incident would show that it was a one-sided attack, with Aleko Elisashvili attacking Ali Babayev from behind first verbally and then physically. However, Aleko Elisashvili’s lawyer, Zviad Kordzadze, disputes this claim.
Aleko Elisashvili has been charged under Article 156 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which provides for imprisonment of up to three years. His pre-trial detention was changed to a 4,000-lari bail following the prosecutor’s request.
