The Times reported that Western intelligence sources said that North Korea supplied half of the artillery shells Russia used in Ukraine.
According to the newspaper around 3 million missiles are shipped from Pyongyang each year to Moscow. However, a large number of them are believed to have been faulty.
The Times reports that despite this, the sheer volume of shells provided has played a crucial part in Russia’s relentless advances in eastern Ukraine. Most recently, the capture of Vuhledar, in Donetsk Oblast, earlier this week.
North Korea is now Russia’s largest outside weapon supplier. This is due to the fact that Russian ammunition stocks are running low as a result of extensive use in Ukraine.
Yonhap reported in August that North Korea had sent containers to Russia, which could have contained up to 6 million artillery rounds.
In exchange for the ammunition, Russia provided North Korea with technology that would help it deploy spy satellites and tanks as well as aircraft.
Late in June, Russian President Vladimir Putin made a visit to Pyongyang. He signed a partnership deal with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. The agreement pledged that both countries would provide assistance to each other if attacked.

But their reliability is also questioned. Around half of the North Korean rockets fired by Russia at Ukraine have malfunctioned, Reuters reported May 7, citing Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office.
